The observation of the GEMBA walk showed:
• Strengths: Provide 3 strengths
1. Comprehensive expertise on service-connected health issues in a single health care system that provides high quality of care to the veterans.
2. Increase access and improve quality of care.
3. The cancer committee supervises, coordinates, and evaluate the entire spectrum of hospital activities to ensure that best medical care is provided to cancer patients.
• Weaknesses: Provide 3 Weaknesses
1. No budget approval for the nursing staffing, medical equipment or supplies for the infusion clinic.
2. Limit space for patient such as no waiting room and there are only 4 beds and 3 chairs for the cancer patients in the infusion clinics.
3. No clerk or secretary to answer phone calls or help cancer patients with their appointments scheduling.
• Opportunities: Provide 3 Opportunities
1. Expand the clinic
2. Provide clinical and clerical supports
3. Involve all stakeholders in the the process of the clinic expansion
• Threats: Provide 3 Threats
1. Potential patient and staff safety
2. Potential breach of medical information (this is due to oncology nurses provide treatments to patients who are sitting in the clinic hallway)
3. Low patient and staff satisfaction. Veterans may seek care from other private sectors. Staff may leave the organization due to the lack of just culture environment
based on the above information
1) Identify an organization (Veterans Affairs Hospital in Long beach) and unit/department/clinic (Infusion Clinic) to review
2) State the mission and vision of the organization
3) Identify the service provided
4) Perform a SWOT analysis of the unit/department/clinic, including government influence.
5) Determine the top goals in each of three areas: human resources, quality improvement, and growth/development: These need to be written in SMART format.
6) Identify actions to achieve stated goals
7) Lastly, answer the three questions for each of the goals as related to the financial status of the department/organization.
For each of the three goals:
a. Describe the approximate cost.
b. Describe the potential savings.
c. Describe the potential revenue enhancement.
