Critically assess the common use of binary categories, such as forced versus voluntary migration or economic migrants versus refugees, in much academic and policy making literature.
Common use of binary categories, such as forced versus voluntary migration
Dualistic here refers to categories which are seen to be distinct or in opposition and that the drivers of different forms are different e. between economic migrants and refugees or between forced and voluntary. Castles 2003 on the Sociology of Forced Migration Castles, S. (2003) ‘Towards a sociology of forced migration and social transformation’ Sociology 37(1): 13-34 argues that economic migration may also be forced and not just refugees. Policy making often treats refugees as if they are the only types of forced migrants.
