Differences in the supply chains for Zara and the new world wine producers

General Instructions:  The exam consists of two parts.  The first part is a take home examination similar to the midterm.  It is worth 180 points.  The second part of the exam will be done in class at the exam time on Wednesday, April 25th at 4:30 pm in CCB 355.  It is worth 20 points.  The total final exam is worth 200 points.

Part I consists of four questions worth 45 points each.  Three questions are mix and match and the fourth question is an essay question.

 

Please support your answer to the essay question using the articles, frameworks, theories, concepts, and cases as well as class lectures.  Be sure to include concepts, definitions, examples, and descriptions of key points if it clarifies your answer.  Do not be redundant or vague.  If a specific term that has been discussed in class or used in the book, please note it.  Please write in paragraph form, including headings and sub-heading unless otherwise instructed.  Answers should be several paragraphs long, but not longer than two pages single-spaced for each question.  Please include a citation if you use material from outside of the class.  Citations are not needed for any of the cases and articles on the syllabus.  Please be as detailed as possible and give explicit examples from the case and articles.  If possible, please put these examples in quotes (“ “).

 

 

 

Question 1 – Contrast two supply chains.

 

Part A – List ten differences in the supply chains for Zara (main subsidiary of Inditex) and the new world wine producers.  To receive an A, differences in jobs, such as sewing versus bottling wines will not be acceptable.  This question ask that you list the steps in the supply chain and note how they are different conceptually.  For example, Zara/Inditex distribute through company-owned or franchised stores, but wine producers must use other forms of distribution including liquor stores, grocery stores and other wineries. Part B.   – Please recommend one managerial and one strategic improvement to either the old wine world or the new wine world.

 
Question 2 – Identify the best organizational form/structure for the company.

 

For each of the following scenarios or companies, please indicate which type of management structure is used.  Choices include the following:  U Form, (Geographic, Product or Customer) M Form, Matrix, Decentralized Federation, Coordinated Federation, Centralized Hub, and Integrated Network (See Power Point Slides on Transnational Organizations for more details. As we discussed in class, please consider the Bottom-of-the-Pyramid approach identified by CK Prahalad as the next highest level of Corporate Social Responsibility that we discussed in class. (You may look up items on Google, but please screen shot, cite it, and add it to this exam for clarification.)  For each of the following scenarios, please identify which level of CSR, including BOP is represented below. Defensive, compliant, managerial, civil or bottom of pyramid. Which stage? Brief explanation ( not necessary)

Question 4 – Bottom of the Pyramid Essay

 

  1. Design a Bottom of the Pyramid strategy for Google/Alphabet. Include all partners necessary for a BOP strategy and explain the role that they play. There are two parts to this response.  The first part is to design a BOP strategy using all the components in the Prahalad article or in the class Powerpoint slides.  The second part is to explain how you would manage it.  This requires at least five different aspects of management to get a grade of “A.”  You may need to look on the web for additional information.  If you do, please cite it.  If you choose to add strategies, they will not be counted as management points.
