Report on studying a local soundscape
Studying a Local Soundscape
In our text, Shelemay writes, “a central goal of Soundscapes is to awaken your interest in the musical world immediately around you” (p. 70). After reviewing “Mapping the City” on page 70, use a variety of sources and methods to learn about a local soundscape on a college campus, in a city or in a section of a city with which you are familiar.
Write a 2-3 page (double-spaced, 12 font) report of your findings. Be sure to include a bibliography of at least 5 sources at the end of your report.
Begin by stating the focus of your study. Then, describe the musical activities in this area in detail. For example, if you choose the city, describe music making on a campus, in local restaurants, churches, the summer concerts in the park and the farmer’s market. Include musical examples within your report that you would find at this soundscape as links available on YouTube or other websites.
Answer the following questions as a part of your report:
- How are musical events discussed or advertised in the media (both print and digital)?
- How difficult is it to learn about all of the musical activities?
- Is there a centralized location where people can learn about all of the musical opportunities in this area?
- Who is most likely to attend these events?
- Do different music cultures share the same performance spaces?
